What’s new with the iPhone 13?
Similar to the two numerical models released before it, the iPhone 13 series lineup includes four different devices. The smallest and the most affordable is the iPhone 13 Mini. The minuscule phone comes back despite the weak sales from the previous generation. Clearly, Apple is hoping that audiences will see the value of the iPhone 13 Mini, which shares several features and hardware specifications with that of the base iPhone 13 model. Also returning are Apple’s premium offerings: the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Both represent a sizable jump in price, performance, and storage, compared to the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini. All four iPhone 13 devices support 5G connectivity.
Design and battery life
Similar to the iPhone 12, the iPhone 13 will come with an aluminum body and flat edges. However, the newer model is noticeably narrower, especially in the areas around the speaker, front-facing camera, and Face ID. According to Apple, these changes made it possible to insert a larger camera in the iPhone 13 lineup of phones without affecting the thickness and weight of the new smartphone. Speaking of, Apple claims that all iPhone 13 models boast longer battery lives compared to their predecessors. For example, the iPhone 13 Pro Max will reportedly last 2.5 hours longer compared to the iPhone 12 Pro Max. As for colors, the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Mini colors are available in pink, midnight, red, blue, and starlight. Meanwhile, the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max are available in graphite, gold, silver, and sierra blue.
Display
From the smallest to the largest, the iPhone 13 Mini will feature a 5.4-inch display with the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro boasting a 6.1-inch display, along with a 6.7-inch display for the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Super Retina XDR displays and a Ceramic Shield front, along with an IP68 water resistance rating are standard across all four iPhone devices. However, the 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, otherwise known as ProMotion, will be exclusive to the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max models.
Cameras
You’ll notice the biggest improvement to the iPhone 13 series phones in their cameras. Physically, the devices will now use a diagonal dual-camera system layout. However, the changes aren’t all aesthetic. Apple also added a new Wide camera with sensor-shift optical image stabilization (OIS) capabilities for better light sensitivity to help improve photo and video quality in low-light situations. Apple has equipped both the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max with new Ultra Wide, Wide, and Telephoto cameras with Night Mode enabled on all three cameras. To accompany these hardware upgrades, Apple is also making improvements via its latest operating system, iOS 15. This includes adding new Photographic systems as well as a brand new Cinematic mode. The former allows you to add effects and edit photos directly from the Camera app. Meanwhile, the latter enables advanced camera features such as depth-of-field transitions, macro video, as well as Time-lapse and Slow-mo videos.
When is the iPhone 13 going to release?
Despite making several software and hardware upgrades to the iPhone 13 series phones, Apple did not adjust its pricing. The iPhone 13 Mini will still start at $699 with the iPhone 13 starting at $799. For those who are interested, Apple will start accepting pre-orders for the new iPhone starting on September 17, this Friday. The phones will start shipping and arriving just a week later on September 24.
