Princess Diaries went on to have a sequel that didn’t quite impress the critics. It did however replicate the box office success of the previous film. During a recent interview with ET to promote her upcoming movie Armageddon Time, Hathaway raved about the possibility of doing a third installment for Princess Diaries. The actor mentioned her excitement to once again work with the “magnificent” Julie Andrews. “I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it,” Hathaway raves. “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen,” she adds. Hathaway was only 18 when she debuted as Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, who is Princess of Genovia in the 2001 film. It’s based on the novel of the same name written by Meg Cabot. Julie Andrews plays the role of Mia’s grandmother and the reigning queen of Genovia. The plot revolves around Mia discovering that she is the sole heir to the kingdom after her father passed away. The awkward Mia transforms into the beautiful Princess Amelia through the efforts of her grandmother, mother, and best friend. The sequel focused on Princess Mia’s search for a prince as it was decreed that she needs to be wed or risk forfeiting the throne. Through her search, she realizes her capability to rule the country on her own. Hathaway has never shied away from wanting to do a third Princess Diaries movie. In 2016, director Garry Marshall revealed that he was in talks with Hathaway for a third movie. Sadly, Marshall passed away that same year. Three years later, Hathaway revealed that a script was already in development with Julie Andrews and producer, Debra Martin Chase, both on board for the project. But, a recent interview by Andrews didn’t inspire confidence in a potential threequel. Andrews revealed on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that the untimely passing of Marshall makes a third installment very unlikely. Of course, Andrews didn’t exactly rule out the possibility. In the same interview, Andrews is claiming that she’d be “thrilled” if a third movie was greenlit. With both Hathaway and Andrews wanting to reprise their roles, who knows? We’re pretty sure that audiences remain just as hungry for more Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi today as they were around two decades ago.
