According to Garvin, “woke reviewers” and “reviewers who couldn’t be bothered to actually play” were to blame for the game’s pedestrian scores. “I will never understand how this game didn’t get universal praise from critics. One of the few times I’ve been utterly blown away because I was expecting an average experience based on the reviews,” Garvin tweets. The director then points out the reasons he thinks caused the average reviews. “It had tech issues like bugs, streaming, and frame rate, it had reviewers who couldn’t be bothered to actually play the game, and three, it had woke reviewers who couldn’t handle a gruff white biker looking at his date’s ass,” Garvin shared on Twitter. Fans quickly reacted to Garvin’s statements pointing out that it was done in poor taste. “C’mon John: ‘woke’? You’re better than that,” said one of the replies. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier responded to Garvin’s tweets stating the irony of his statement that “woke reviewers who couldn’t handle a gruff white biker.” Games like Gears of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 received critical acclaim while “starring gruff white guys.” Schreier also called out Garvin for throwing his old engineers under the bus. “As the former creative director of a video game studio, publicly throwing your old engineers under the bus is definitely a choice,” Schreier tweets.
— Jason Schreier (@jasonschreier) December 7, 2022 Days Gone had a Metacritic score of 71 for the PS4 version while the PC version scored better at 76. Critics were disappointed that the open world lacked content and the quests were repetitive. Reviewers did praise the game’s action sequences with critics describing the experience as “terrifying” and “tense”. John Garvin isn’t the only Days Gone director with outrageous claims. Game director Jeff Ross claimed that the game sold over eight million copies as of 2020. This figure has been disputed by gaming outlets as Ross did not cite official figures from Sony. Ross clarified later on that his source for “sales numbers” was a now-defunct website using Trophy data to calculate the rough number of players for a particular game. Game rentals, used or shared copies, and PS Plus subscriptions would contribute to the player number. The planned Days Gone a href=“https://www.xfire.com/days-gone-2-cancellation-reason/">sequel was never greenlit by Sony. Sources revealed the company cited the long development cycle and the game’s mixed reception as the reasons why the sequel did not go into production. Bend Studio is currently working on an unnamed new IP after reportedly declining to help Naughty Dog on a multiplayer project as well as a new Uncharted game.
