God of War Ragnarok will launch this year, this much we know for sure. We also understand why it wasn’t at the June 2 State of Play showcase, but it’s hard not to worry when it’s past the year’s halfway mark and the game is nowhere in sight. This is notwithstanding that the latest info hints that the God of War sequel is due out on or before September 30. Unfortunately, the next big PlayStation exclusive might miss its Q3 2022 mark. According to PlayStation Game Size on Twitter, Sony has changed the internal release date for the upcoming action-adventure game from September 30, 2022, to December 31, 2022. Don’t worry. This doesn’t mean that God of War Ragnarok’s new release date is New Year’s Eve. Rather, this is a temporary placeholder date similar to Q4 2022. This would also imply that the new God of War game isn’t due for at least another four months.
🟦 Q4 🤔 🟥 #GodofWarRagnarok #PS4 #PS5 pic.twitter.com/bphW2w9Bda — PlayStation Game Size (@PlaystationSize) June 8, 2022 Honestly? It’s impossible to tell when God of War: Ragnarok will release. Quite frankly? We don’t even care at this point. Santa Monica Studio can take as much time as it needs to craft a worthy sequel to the PS4’s best-selling game. The developers reportedly took a half-decade to make 2018’s God of War soft reboot, and we wouldn’t mind waiting as long for the follow-up. But, at the very least, Santa Monica Studio and Sony should come forward with a narrower release window as opposed to just 2022. Most wouldn’t mind seeing God of War: Ragnarok in 2023 if it means good news for the game. God of War Ragnarok has already broken a long-running series tradition, so a delay isn’t totally outlandish. However, we are hoping that Sony has at least one or two games to fill in the gap if the sequel doesn’t come out in Q3 or Q4 this year. As it stands, the only big upcoming PS5 exclusive is Forspoken in October. Another AAA title for the PS5 would definitely widen its gap against the Xbox Series S/X after Microsoft hit a snag with Starfield and Redfall. If we’re lucky, Sony could slot in the rumored The Last of Us Remake, which supposedly comes out on September 2. Of course, we’re all speaking in hypotheticals here. It’s best to wait for Sony to come out and announce something more official. Until then, just assume that God of War: Ragnarok is only a few months away.
