The last bit is what seems to have happened with Greg Russo. After a successful debut with 2021’s Mortal Kombat film, Russo just teased that he is working on a film adaptation of “one of the greatest FPS games of all time.”
What is video game movie is Greg Russo working on next?
Greg Russo is relatively fresh in the movie industry and his first project was a massive hit. Although it didn’t exactly make the same numbers as Black Widow, the film did earn an estimated $83.6 million with a budget of around $55 million. Because of its success, a sequel featuring Johnny Cage, among other iconic Mortal Kombat characters, is reportedly already in development. Now, Russo just teased that he is involved in another film adaptation of a popular video game franchise.
— Greg Russo (@WriterRusso) July 12, 2021 As per his tweet, Russo’s next project will see him directing the film in question. Unfortunately, he stopped short of confirming what video game he’ll be bringing to the big screen. The only thing that we know is that it’s based on “one of the greatest FPS games of all time”, which is a relatively long list. If it’s any consolation, Russo did respond to comments from excited audiences. “I tried. I swear I tried!!!”, Russo said in a reply to someone that suggested Turok. At this point, the film adaptation could be anything from Half-Life to Call of Duty, Halo, Battlefield, or Far Cry. As we’ve mentioned earlier, live-action video game adaptations haven’t always panned out. While the potential to make big money at the box office is always there, for every Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) and Detective Pikachu (2019), there are multiple films like Alone in the Dark (2005) and Hitman: Agent 47 (2015). It remains to be seen what Russo’s next project is and how successful it will be. For now, we can look forward to other video game adaptation projects that are currently in the works, including a Ghost of Tsushima movie and HBO’s The Last of Us TV series adaptation, among others. There are also a ton of video game series expected to hit Netflix in 2021 and beyond. Suffice to say, whatever Russo is working on next, it won’t be the sole movie adaption coming.
