This week, fans were treated to the first ever official trailer for James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The emotionally charged teaser dropped at the Comic-Con Experience or CCXP in Sau Paolo Brazil. The upcoming superhero movie will be Gunn’s final project with Marvel Studios. Gunn was recently tapped to be co-CEO of the newly formed DC Studios and will guide a new group of superheroes in his future projects. Chris Pratt reprises his role as Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, in the upcoming movie. The leader of the misfits known as the Guardians of the Galaxy is seen reeling from Gamora’s absence after the events of the war against Thanos. Recall that Gamora was killed by her stepfather Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War to obtain the Soul Stone. A younger version of Gamora appeared with Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. She traveled to the future and skipped the events of the first two movies and thus did not have memories of Peter Quill and his merry band. In the trailer, it’s revealed that Gamora is now working as a leader for the Ravagers. Zoe Saldana will be reprising her role as Gamora in the final outing for the original team. Much of the trailer is centered around Rocket who is played by Bradley Cooper. There are scenes in the movie alluding to his back story and links to the High Evolutionary. According to director James Gunn, the movie “tells this story about Rocket and where he came from and where he’s going, and how that ties into everybody else, and the end of this iteration of The Guardians.” The trailer also gives us our first glimpse of Adam Warlock after being teased in the first and second movies of the trilogy. He is seemingly in a fistfight with Nebula who is now part of the Guardians of the Galaxy. We also get to see a more muscular version of Groot in the upcoming movie. The tree-like humanoid has matured after being an adolescent in the second movie. Vin Diesel will be reprising his role as Groot after his solo animated shorts series on Disney+. The trailer’s soundtrack is “In the Meantime” by Spacehog from 1994. The Guardians of the Galaxy movies have been known for their awesome tunes and it looks like the final outing will live up to that reputation. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be flying into theaters on May 5, 2023.
