One of these is House of the Dragon, a prequel to Game of Thrones that’s coming to HBO and HBO Max in 2022. Here’s everything that you need to know about the House Targaryen-led sequel:
What is House of the Dragon?
Back in 2019, just as people were waiting for George R.R. Martin to finally finish and release the planned sixth novel in A Song of Ice and Fire, the famous best-selling author went ahead and dropped Fire & Blood Vol. 1. The book itself is over 700 pages long and covers the entire history of the House Targaryen, the incestuous house that eventually produced one of Game of Thrones’ main characters, Daenerys Targaryen. The first volume of the book (there’s a second volume planned for a release sometime in the future), will serve as the basis of House of the Dragon. But, make no mistake. The upcoming HBO TV series will include appearances of other Westerosi families as well, including the Lannisters and the Starks. Just don’t expect anyone from Game of Thrones to make an appearance in House of the Dragon. The Targaryen-centric TV show will be set some 300 years before Robert Baratheon’s conquest eventually led to the events of Game of Thrones.
What’s the story of House of the Dragon?
With over 700 pages of material to work with, House of the Dragon will have several years’ worth of content before it even comes close to catching up to George R.R Martin’s leisurely publishing pace. However, according to Entertainment Weekly, it appears that the showrunners already have something planned for House of the Dragon. The show will focus on the period leading up to and including the Targaryen Civil War.
Who are the cast members and crew behind House of the Dragon?
Unlike Game of Thrones, George R.R Martin himself and producer-writer Ryan Condal are on board as the co-creators of the House of the Dragon TV series. The extent of Martin’s involvement remains a mystery at the moment. However, Condal is confirmed to be one of the co-showrunners alongside Miguel Sapochnik. Most fans might know Sapochnik as the award-winning director of five Game of Thrones episodes, including Battle of the Bastards.
When is House of the Dragon going to premiere?
House of the Dragon kicked off production earlier this year. A few months later, HBO would drop the show’s first-ever trailer, confirming that it is going to release in 2022.
Is there other Game of Thrones spin-offs in development?
HBO has quite a few Game of Thrones spin-offs planned for the next few years, but none have materialized quite like House of the Dragon. Earlier in July, HBO decided to axe the Flea Bottom spin-off. Meanwhile, both the Sea Snakes and 10,000 Ships are not guaranteed to see the light of the day either.
