Speaking at the New York Comic Con, Stewart told fans that he was open to making a new movie for the franchise. “I understand there are Paramount+ people here and Paramount Pictures. We could still make a movie,” Stewart remarked. It is interesting to hear the actor mention a new movie as Star Trek: Picard ends this season. Season 3 sees the return of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast and the series finale could be set up to continue the legacy of the crew with a feature film. A movie featuring Stewart and the original TNG cast would be a nice send-off for the long-time Star Trek actor. Stewart has played the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard since 1987. Stewart’s remarks may just be a playful joke towards the Paramount execs. Fans however can interpret the statement as a sign that Picard and the rest of the TNG crew would survive at the end of Season 3.
Chances of a new Star Trek film
The chances that we will be seeing a Patrick Stewart-led Star Trek film are pretty slim at this point. Paramount has recently removed the fourth installment of Star Trek from its 2023 schedule. The movie starring Chris Pine, Zoe Saldaña, Simon Pegg, and John Cho has been reportedly delayed, indefinitely. Reports indicate that Matt Shakman, who was originally tapped to direct Star Trek 4, stepped down from the project and was the main reason for the delay. Shakman is set to direct the Fantastic Four reboot for Marvel Studios and has cited the resulting scheduling conflict as his reason for stepping down. Producer J.J. Abrams announced the development of Star Trek 4 back in February and gave a December 22, 2023 release date for the film. Well, since Star Trek 4 has been shelved indefinitely, perhaps Paramount can explore the Patrick Stewart film suggestion. There is nothing more exciting for Star Trek fans than seeing Jean-Luc Picard at the helm of the starship USS Enterprise one last time. Stewart and the rest of the TNG crew return for Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard, which premieres on February 16. The final season will have eight episodes and will be available for streaming on Paramount+.
