In their post, advaith shared screenshots from a recent Discord mobile app build for iOS devices. The first screenshot showed numerous settings, including an option to “Join on Xbox” and an option to “Join Voice on PlayStation.” The second screenshot showed a list of PlayStation 5 and 4 features that Discord users can enjoy while using their PlayStations. According to the screenshot, both PS5 and PS4 users will be allowed to display the game they are playing. However, only PlayStation 5 users will be able to join in voice chats. The third and final screenshot encouraged players to sign in with PlayStation to enable them to achieve full integration.
— advaith (@advaithj1) October 23, 2022 The PlayStation update is a surprise to many users and the suddenness makes many believe that the integration of Discord with the PlayStation consoles will happen sooner than later. Some are speculating it could arrive on January 19 with the version 6.50 update. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first rumors of a Discord integration with PlayStation will surface. Tom Henderson, one of the gaming industry’s most reliable journalists, reported earlier in the year that the integration will arrive when PlayStation 5 undergoes version 7.00 update on March 8, 2023.
Version 6.00 is September 7th, 2022. So Discord integration on the PS5 is March 8th, 2023 (if nothing else changes). — Tom Henderson (@Tom_Henderson) August 29, 2022 Discord is a fan-favorite software used for voice and text communication and community engagement through various servers. It’s vital due to its VoIP and instant messaging features. Due to its appeal to gamers and its many advantages, Sony bought minor shares in May 2021. From then on, the two companies established a partnership. Prior to Sony’s investment in Discord, Microsoft had tried to purchase the platform but failed. While announcing the partnership, Jim Ryan, the President and CEO of PlayStation Studios stated, “At PlayStation, we’re constantly looking for new ways to enable players around the world to connect with one another, form new friendships and communities, and share fun experiences and lasting memories. It’s in this spirit that we’re excited to announce a new partnership with Discord, the communication service popularized by gamers and used by more than 140 million people every month around the world.” He continued, “Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.” Integrating Discord with PlayStation will offer several benefits. It will facilitate easier communication between gamers using PlayStation consoles and other platforms, like Xbox and PC. It will also allow PlayStation users to share their activity feeds and link their gaming accounts for future updates. Ironically, Sony’s PlayStation is late to the party as Microsoft already launched Discord voice chat support for Xbox users in September. Whether the integration will occur with version 6.50 or version 7.00 is something only time and Sony can confirm. Nevertheless, PlayStation users can enjoy the version 6.00 which was released September 7, 2022 in the meantime.
