Wizards of the Coast, publisher of both Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, have been busy with crossover opportunities. As part of the Universe Beyond and Universe Within subsets, Magic: The Gathering has teamed up with IPs from Godzilla to Stranger Things, The Walking Dead to Warhammer 40,000. But why a crossover with real life celebrity Post Malone? Check out the details below.
The first confirmation of a collaboration of Magic: The Gathering with Post Malone was released in December 2021 on Hasbro’s official investor news and through Businesswire. Nathan Stewart, Head of Franchise Marketing for Wizards of the Coast said this about Post Malone: Post Malone added his enthusiasm for the collaboration: During the October 4, 2022 Hasbro Investor Day, President of Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming Cynthia Williams confirmed that the collaboration with Post Malone would be a Secret Lair drop. This Secret Lair subset will be a series of cards that will be connected to Post Malone and the artist himself will have some input in. Post Malone (whose real name is Austin Richard Post) is a chart-topping musician with hits such as Rockstar (2017), Psycho (2018), and Sunflower (2018) which was included in the soundtrack for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The artist is an unabashed fan and player of Magic: The Gathering. The rapper, singer, and songwriter happily participates in events and happenings that involve the most popular collectible card game in the world. At one point, Post Malone even challenged fans to a game of MTG while providing a $100,000 prize, collaborating with Whatnot last August. He has also spent $800,000 for a Black Lotus card which is signed by the late Chris Rush. Rush did the art for the Black Lotus and is one of the original 25 artists who worked on the earliest Magic: The Gathering sets. Wizards of the Coast has reciprocated this love for the game by creating a one-off foil skinned card to Post Malone. This card is Zur the Enchanter (originally from the Coldsnap expansion set) which has art by Chase Stone depicting the celebrity in the role of the character. The Post Malone collaboration is just one of the recent crossovers for Magic: The Gathering. Warhammer 40000 Commander decks were released this October. Plus, The Transformers will be having a Universes Beyond 15-card set included in The Brothers’ War later in November. The art and card details for The Post Malone Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drop, as well as its release date, have yet to be announced.
