Here’s everything that Sony announced about the PSVR 2 at CES 2022:
What are the specs of the PSVR 2?
We learned a lot about the PSVR 2 at Sony’s latest press conference. For example, the tech giant revealed that the name of the controllers, Sense Controllers. Similar to DualSense, the Sense Controllers will offer features such as haptic feedback. Meanwhile, the PSVR 2 headset itself will come with an OLED display, with 2000 x 2040 per eye panel resolution and support 90Hz as well as 120Hz with a field of view of 110 degrees. According to Sony’s blog post, the PSVR 2 will come with 4 cameras on the headset and a controller-tracking IR camera. The latter is dedicated to eye tracking. Or, as Sony describes it, it’s responsible for making sure that “your movements and the direction you look at are reflected in-game without the need for an external camera.”
Are there new games available for the PSVR 2?
In addition to new information about the PSVR 2, Sony also confirmed that it’s already working on a new game for the incoming VR headset. Horizon Call of the Mountain is a joint venture between Guerilla Games and Firesprite Games. This effectively confirms the rumors last year that a VR game based on the Horizon series was in development after Sony acquired Firesprite Games. Unfortunately, Sony announced few details about Call of the Mountain outside of confirming its existence. We might hear more about the game once Forbidden West is released on February 18.
When are we going to hear more about the PSVR 2?
The original PSVR, which Sony released back in 2016, was a fairly competent and affordable alternative to the more expensive VR hardware on the market. However, it wasn’t perfect; it had limited resolution and field of view, among other things. But, because it was natively supported by the PS4 and PS4 Pro with several dedicated PSVR titles to boot, many still loved what it brought to the table. With the incoming PSVR 2 for the PS5, we have little doubt that Sony will work its usual magic once again. Unfortunately, Sony did not reveal when audiences will get a chance to hear more about the PSVR 2 again. There’s also little information available about when it might release. For now, all we have to go on is Sony’s CES 2022 showcase and rumors that a Chinese manufacturer will start mass-producing the PSVR 2 soon.
