What is interesting here is that Emma isn’t going to reprise her original role as just Gwen Stacy - she’ll be the one to suit up as Spider-Man this time around.
Is Spider-Gwen about to make her cinematic debut?
As a character, Gwen is arguably as old as Spider-Man himself. She first appeared as Peter Parker’s original love interest in the comics and her death at Green Goblin’s hands is widely considered one of the few moments that helped shape Peter Parker’s life along with Uncle Ben’s death. A different version of the same event made its way to 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which recently became a talking point among fans who’ve seen Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, in 2014, Marvel introduced an alternate version of Gwen from Earth-65. This Gwen wasn’t just Peter Parker’s girlfriend. Instead, she was the one who got bitten by a radioactive spider, becoming Spider-Woman or Spider-Gwen among fans. She eventually made her way to the main Marvel comics universe with Hailee Steinfield lending her voice for the character’s appearance in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. We know from the earlier trailer for 2022’s Across the Spider-Verse that this version of Gwen is going to return with Sony reportedly planning a spin-off featuring other female Spider-Man protagonists such as Jessica Drew and Silk.
— MyTimeToShineHello (@MyTimeToShineH) December 26, 2021 Now, it appears that the popularity of Spider-Gwen as a character is making Sony want to double down on a live-action feature film starring Emma Stone as a more limber version of Peter Parker’s high school sweetheart. The rumors come courtesy of @EdwinSRP and @MyTiemtoShineH on Twitter. Both users have a track history for revealing sensitive information about Marvel Studios’ plans. Interestingly enough, the same pair also claims that Sony has plans on bringing Garfield back for a third Spider-Man film. Furthermore, there are also reports that Garfield’s return will not be in a stand-alone Spider-Man movie. Instead, he’ll pop up and reprise his role as Spider-Man in Venom 3 and go toe-to-toe with Eddie Brock. Unfortunately, Sony has not confirmed anything, so take everything with a grain of salt. It appears that Sony and Disney are still busy planning on what to do next while they reap the benefits of their latest partnership. Speaking of, Sony’s decision to re-up its relationship with Disney has yielded dividends. No Way Home is now officially the highest-grossing Sony film ever. The news comes just shortly after No Way Home set a new pandemic box-office record. Also, there’s a leak going around that describes several cut scenes from No Way Home, including an alternate ending.
