The Ogre Battle series is one of Square Enix’s earlier and biggest hits. The tactical role-playing game series started life in 1993 in Japan as Quest Corporation’s Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen. Key members of the original studio would later join Square Enix following the release of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together in 1995. Afterward, Square produced three more games in the franchise, the latest of which being Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis for Game Boy Advance in June 2001 and a remake of the 1995 classic title for the PlayStation Portable in 2010. Since then, Square Enix hasn’t talked much about the Ogre Battle strategy RPG series until details of a Tactics Ogre Remaster appeared in last year’s infamous Nvidia GeForce leak. With Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition confirming the Chrono Cross remaster on the aforementioned list, it’s safe to assume that the datamined information was legitimate. The sighting of the Tactics Ogre: Reborn listing suggests that Square Enix is working on a remaster of two of its most iconic turn-based strategy games, Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics.
「Tactics Ogre: Reborn(タクティクス オウガ:リボーン)」 を商標出願。🤔 pic.twitter.com/jZoXTs9PHK — れんか (@Renka_schedule) April 7, 2022 Unfortunately, all we can do right now is speculate about what the filing could mean. Is Tactics Ogre: Reborn the name of a remaster or a remake of a single Ogre Battle game? Or is Square Enix working on a remastered collection of all five Ogre Battle games? Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together is the best-selling game in the franchise, but most gamers these days will probably remember Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis more. There’s also Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber, which isn’t as well-known, but would make a perfect fit for the highly controversial Switch Online Expansion Pass. With a brand new name filed, Square Enix is definitely onto something, the only question now is, what kind of Ogre Battle game does Square Enix have planned? The good news here is that Square Enix recently worked with Yasami Matsuno, who is best known for his work on the first two Ogre Battle games and 1997’s Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced, on a pair of raids for its hit MMO, Final Fantasy XIV. Given the healthy and ongoing relationship between both parties, Matsuno probably had a lot of creative input in whatever Tactics Ogre: Reborn is going to be once it comes out. Speaking of Square Enix, the Japanese video game publisher has a big year ahead for JRPG fans. For starters, audiences can look forward to Square’s first new Valkyrie game, Valkyrie Elysium, later this year. Meanwhile, a new Star Ocean game is also scheduled to come out before the year ends as well. Not to mention, Square Enix confirmed last year that a new mainline Mana game for consoles is in development. Finally, we should start hearing more about Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 and Final Fantasy XVI soon.
