Fast forward to today and we now have a photo of the two Gods of Thunder side by side. In a new still, courtesy of Empire Magazine, Jane Foster and Thor Odinson are reunited with Thor wearing a new costume and his former flame wielding Mjolnir. Interestingly enough, Thor isn’t with the Stormbreaker. This would hint that the scene where Thor “buries” the magical hatchet happens very early in Thor 4 and he might go most of the film without his latest weapon. In addition to the new image, Empire also sat down with the two-time Thor director, Taika Waititi, who explained how they brought back Jane Foster as Thor. According to Waititi, he didn’t know that the upcoming MCU outing will adopt the events of Mighty Thor until they started working on the story. The filmmaker added that he wanted Foster to be “part of the adventure,” which is why Portman’s return will see her don the hammer and the cape. It’s been nearly a decade since Foster appeared in the MCU after parting ways with Marvel Studios following the release of 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. Thor later referred to Foster as his former flame, suggesting that the two parted ways in the years after. It’s unclear how Jane got a hold of Mjolnir. Technically, Mjolnir shouldn’t exist in the current timeline. After beating Thanos in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers traveled in time to return Mjolnir. This meant that Hela would still have crushed Mjolnir as depicted in the 2017 film, Thor: Ragnarok. This has led to speculation that we’ll see a Jane Foster variant in Thor: Love and Thunder. Then again, Kevin Feige would probably want to give the MCU a break from the multiverse in favor of a space-faring adventure. In the original comic books, Jane Foster falls terminally ill from cancer and the only way to save her is to turn into the Mighty Thor. Unfortunately, this is a temporary fix as Jane’s cancer returns as soon as she goes back to her human form. Given her absence from the MCU for over a decade, Waititi could use the same storyline to bring her back for Thor 4. All told, Thor: Love and Thunder should be another blockbuster hit for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the moment, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is posed to make a billion at the global box office.
