TLDR; the plot of the Assassin’s Creed games might have been messy and sometimes hard to wrap your head around, but the games themselves were amazing. After a series of big hits, Ubisoft eventually missed the mark, starting with the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity back in 2014. This was followed by a couple more duds until Ubisoft finally found its footing with 2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins, which turned the games into open-world RPGs that have since seen players explore Egypt, Greece, Norway, England, Ireland, and Paris. Now, it seems like Ubisoft wants to change things again with Assassin’s Creed Infinity.
What is Assassin’s Creed Infinity?
Assassin’s Creed Infinity is the codename for Ubisoft’s “upcoming, early in-development project”. Ubisoft, which has officially confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Infinity is in the works, describes Infinity as part of its new “collaborative, cross-studio structure” between two studios. Specifically, Ubisoft Quebec and Ubisoft Montreal. Ubisoft claims that this collaboration will help “guide, grow, evolve, and define the overall future of Assassin’s Creed.” Ubisoft’s own statement was light on the details about Infinity. However, a report from Bloomberg claims that Infinity will be a live-service game. It describes it as something that will continue to grow and evolve post-launch. An Ubisoft spokesperson told Bloomberg that the goal is to “exceed the expectations of fans who have been asking for a more cohesive approach.” It seems as if Ubisoft is taking a page out of Rockstar Games’ playbook with Infinity. Rockstar is most famous for its Grand Theft Auto games. The latest of which, Grand Theft Auto 5, was released back in 2013, but has kept players’ attention for nearly a decade after, as it saw new life as a live-service platform following the release of the Grand Theft Auto Online expansion, which is set to release as a standalone title itself shortly. Infinity is looking to be like the Grand Theft Auto Online for the Assassin’s Creed games. How Infinity will look like exactly and what else it will take away from other live-service platforms is not something that anyone, even Ubisoft, can answer right now.
Is Assassin’s Creed Infinity going to release soon?
Origins is widely considered a turning point for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. However, it wasn’t without its doubters. Subsequent releases such as Odyssey and Valhalla might have improved on what Origins built. But many fans have been asking for Ubisoft to bring back more classic Assassin’s Creed gameplay. It remains to be seen if Infinity is Ubisoft’s answer to that. If nothing else, a live-service game could help explore the conflict between the Assassins and Templar more. Either way, we shouldn’t expect Infinity to release anytime soon. At the moment, Ubisoft is busy providing extended post-launch support for Valhalla. The latest Assassin’s Creed game is set to receive its second expansion in The Siege of Paris anytime soon. After The Siege of Paris, Ubisoft has confirmed that Valhalla will be getting even more DLC. Rumor has it that at least two additional expansions are coming soon. A leaker claims that the third expansion for Valhalla will be set in Zvarthalheim. Meanwhile, the other will be set in Muspelheim.
